Ten researchers from the Summer Foundation participated in the Annual Brain Impairment Conference in Darwin.
Our research team was among the line-up of international and national speakers at the Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment (ASSBI) event last month.
They presented on topics including healthcare, housing, support, community engagement, aged care and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The theme for this year was “Moving Forward Together”, with a focus on improving outcomes for people living with acquired brain injury.
Congratulations to the Summer Foundation’s Ella-Rose Minter who won the ASSBI Mindlink Brightwater Award for Interdisciplinary Presentation. Ella’s presentation highlighted the barriers to effective discharge from the perspective of health professionals working with hospital patients who have disability and complex needs. Ella discussed the challenges to timely and effective discharge of NDIS participants and the complex interplay of the health, NDIS and disability sectors.
Summer Foundation CEO Dr Di Winkler’s presentation highlighted that although the number of young people in aged care is falling, in most cases it is not for the right reasons. The drop is mainly attributed to younger people dying in aged care or ‘ageing out’ when they turn 65.
The presidential address from new ASSBI president, A/Prof Dana Wong, discussed how ‘thinking small and big’ and integrating individual, clinician, and systems levels of understanding can assist in the translation of research into practice to improve outcomes after acquired brain injury.
